Once upon a time some friends started a book club. I of course got lost in the non-existent details and set out to introduce the things no-one asked for, so I name the club and made an official book mark (Pulp Friction — Cool Books for Heated Discussion). We apparently read one book, which I only know because I wrote about it on my blog NINE years ago. Even having that for reference jogs no memories about the plot. Clearly it made an impression.

I still love the idea of book clubs, although in reality am still no so great at the follow through. That didn’t stop me from reworking the old design. Lately I’ve been having fun tearing apart things from the past and reworking them — injecting a new idea, cleaning up poor execution. It’s a calming exercise even if it doesn’t necessarily come out better.

If I were to start a book club I tried to think of something that would fit the bill. What would inspire a debate. I landed on a Woody Allen collection of short stories. Not because the stories themselves are likely to elicit much of a round table, but because of the author. I used to adore his writing, and there’s probably something in his work worth a conversation. However it’s his personal life that gets my wheels turning. He feels like the right example to frame a broader dialogue.
What happens when artistic contributions don’t align legally or ethically with the creator? Can we separate the two? Should we separate the two? At what point? How? It’s a topic that comes often between me and my husband and I still don’t really have an answer.....
